The rating is used to express user experiences with specific places and provided services. Users can add reviews that help others decide whether to visit or use a particular place.
Basic information about rating places
- You can only add ratings as a logged-in user, both on the website and in the mobile application
- You can rate a selected place only once, but the rating can be adjusted/updated over time (e.g., based on a new experience)
- You can rate globally, including:
- Outdoor places visible on the map, such as tourist attractions, peaks, viewpoints, lakes, rivers, monuments, etc.
- Businesses and institutions, such as restaurants, hotels, shops, hairdressers, cinemas, museums, services, etc.
- For some selected e-shops in the Czech Republic, we also take over user experiences with shopping for goods from external sources (Zboží.cz); these reviews are also displayed on the place detail and enter the calculation of the average rating of the place
- For places in the accommodation category, we also independently display average ratings from Booking.com
- A summary of all your submitted ratings is available to you within My Mapy in the Rating section
- Ratings are part of user-generated content, and when adding them, you need to follow rules and licensing agreements
Entering ratings
If you want to write a rating for a given place, just search for the place and select the option to Add rating, or simply fill in the number of stars. You will then go through a multi-step process. The user rating consists of several parts:
- Star rating: Basic rating of the place in the form of stars ranging from 1 (min) to 5 (max) with an accuracy of 0.5 stars (mandatory)
- Structured rating: For selected categories of business places (e.g., accommodations, restaurants, campsites, parking lots) you can provide feedback on four selected criteria in the form of clear emoticons, this type simplifies the rating entry and provides important feedback on the quality of provided services to other users and business owners (optional)
- Text review: At your discretion, you can add a text description of your experience to the star rating in a maximum length of 2500 characters, paragraphs, bullet points, or emoticons are also supported (optional)
- Photos: For more illustration, you can also add photos of the place (interior/exterior), provided services, food details, etc. to the rating (optional)
Using the mobile app, you can submit ratings even if you are offline; they will upload once you are back online.
Displaying user ratings
Individual user ratings of a specific place are displayed in the Place Details, at the bottom part. Up to 3 most relevant ratings from other users and possibly your own rating (if you have already rated the place in the past) are displayed. You can display all reviews of the place by selecting “Show all ratings”. The list of ratings can be sorted by various criteria if needed (most relevant, newest, oldest, best, worst).
Approval process
Each newly added rating undergoes an automatic check, and in some cases, a subsequent manual review. For this reason, your rating may not be immediately visible to other users. If your rating is going through the approval process, a clock symbol is displayed next to it. The approved rating is assigned an internal weight by the algorithm, which then enters into the calculation of the overall average rating of the place. If your rating is rejected based on the rules, this information, including the reason for rejection, is displayed to you next to the rating. You will also receive an informative email. Administrators reserve the right to determine the validity of the review.
Average place rating
The overall average place rating is calculated by an internal algorithm that takes many factors into account, such as the age of individual reviews, the trustworthiness of the reviewer, and so on.
The average rating is displayed only for places that have a sufficient amount of relevant and credible reviews.
Places with an average rating of at least 4.0 that are also among the top 20% of the best-rated places in the given category qualify for highlighting the average rating with a green badge. Other places in the given category have the average rating visualized with a white-framed badge.
The display of the average rating consists of:
- Numeric value: Decimal number on a scale of 1.0–5.0
- Text description: Verbal designation of quality according to the following scale
- 1.0–3.0: Average
- 3.0–4.0: Good
- 4.0–4.3: Very Good
- 4.3–4.7: Excellent
- 4.7–5.0: Fantastic
The average rating is displayed for places:
- In search results (search results can be filtered by it)
- On the place detail
- On the map
