Photos

On Mapy.com, you can easily add photos of interesting places you have visited. Your images help others envision what a place looks like, whether it is worth visiting, and what the atmosphere is like. Photos can be uploaded either via the Mapy.com website or directly from the mobile app. To upload pictures, you must log in with your user account.

Basic information about photos

Upload photos to Mapy.com that show how the place looks, what its current condition or atmosphere is. Examples of unsuitable images include:

  • Selfies and personal portraits
  • Pictures of friends and family
  • Photos with advertising content
  • Images containing personal data (e.g., car license plates, close-up faces, etc.)
  • Photos with pornographic content
Rules
  • Upload only your own photos that you have taken yourself; you will be credited as the author
  • Do not copy captions from others for your photos
  • Photos are considered user content; when uploading them, follow the terms of the user content license agreement

Approval process

Each newly added photo undergoes automatic checks and possibly subsequent manual review. For this reason, your photos may not appear to other users immediately. If your photo is undergoing manual approval, a clock symbol will be displayed on it. If your photo is rejected based on the rules, you will be informed along with the reason for rejection. You will also receive a notification email. Administrators reserve the right to determine the eligibility of the photo.

Uploading photos

  • Find the place to which you want to add a photo
  • Click on Add photo
  • Upload the photo and add optional details (date, description, etc.)
  • Submit and wait for approval

Alternatively, you can upload photos directly from the photo gallery or from a map coordinate. The process is similar, but you need to select the place to attach the photo to in the first and second steps (the photo will then be displayed in the gallery of that location). If you don’t select a place, the photo will only appear on the Photographic map. Photos can also be added as part of a rating of the place, leading to their automatic inclusion in the location’s photo gallery.

What to include with the photo

For maximum benefit, we recommend providing a reference to a specific location (e.g., castle, lookout tower, restaurant, etc.), the precise position from which it was taken, the name and description of the photo that relates only to the place (not containing information about the author or advertising), or the photo’s date (automatically or manually).

  • Select a location in the Mapy.com application
  • Swipe the menu to the left to find the Add photo option
  • Select an existing photo or take a new one with the built-in camera
  • Photos will be uploaded immediately or after connecting to Wi-Fi (depending on settings). Photos can also be added offline and will be uploaded later after connection

Photos can also be added as part of a rating of the place, leading to their automatic inclusion in the location’s photo gallery.

Viewing photos

Location gallery

This shows photos related to a given place in a thumbnail gallery format on the right panel. You can sort the photos in the gallery by various criteria (e.g., number of likes or date of taking/uploading). You can easily adjust the width of the gallery panel by dragging the left edge of the right panel with your mouse.

Your photo gallery

This displays your uploaded photos, including total summaries (total number of your approved photos, total number of viewings of all your approved photos, total number of likes across all your approved photos). Photos within the gallery can be sorted by various criteria (most popular, newest, most viewed). The gallery is public (part of your public profile) and can be shared via a URL link.

Author gallery

This displays photos uploaded by other users available within a public profile. You can access a public profile by clicking on any author’s name/photo badge.

Photographic map

This displays photo thumbnails over the chosen map base where they were taken (you can turn on the photomap as an additional layer). The photomap also shows photos not associated with a specific location but only with a position. You can view detailed photos by clicking on the thumbnail.

Ratings

This shows photos entered directly within a specific rating of a place.

Photo details

This displays an enlarged photo in a separate floating window. For each photo, you can see the author’s name (with an option to go to their public gallery), the number of likes (which you can add), photo description, and a thumbnail map with the place of taking. You can zoom in and out on the photo, view it in full-screen mode, share, or report it.

Additional features

Liking photos

Liking photos is a way to express that you like or find a photo useful – for example, if it accurately describes the current state of a location. You can give each photo only one like, displayed as a green heart on the respective photo. The total number of likes is shown numerically after the heart symbol. Photos with more likes are displayed preferentially. To like a photo that you like, click on the heart icon. The heart will turn green. If you wish to remove the like, click the heart again.

Reporting incorrect photos

Reporting is used to ensure the quality of user photos. If you come across an inappropriate photo, you can report it for review. Photos may be removed if, for example, their map position doesn’t match the location taken, they don’t belong to the place, are of poor quality, contain unsuitable content, or there’s an issue with their authorship. If a report is confirmed, the photo will be rejected and hidden. To report a photo, click on the options icon (three dots) and select “Report a problem”. In the form, choose or fill in the reason and confirm.
